- Our Chromatic 10 hole Ocarinas are tuned to allow each half note (except the first half note) to be played with appropriate holes entirely open. This allows for all but one of the 18 notes (including half notes) to be played very easily. The tuning we use for our Chromatic 10 hole Ocarina was developed by Guiseppe Donati of Italy in 1583. This tuning is still used today.
- Our Diatonic 4 hole Ocarinas are tuned for simplicity and follow the standard tuning for 4 hole Ocarinas. Diatonic tuning can be seen in the Irish Whistle or the Pennywhistle. This Diatonic 4 hole style of Ocarina allows for 13 notes (half note progression) to be played.
- Our Diatonic 6 hole Ocarinas follow the same progression as our 4 hole Ocarinas with the advantage of increasing the range by 3 notes. This Diatonic 6 hole style of Ocarina allows for 16 notes (half note progression) to be played.
- Our Pentatonic 8 hole Ocarinas are tuned very similar to most Native American Flutes. However, flute fingering differs because flute tuning relies primarily on hole placement up the flute barrel. Ocarina tuning relies on how much air exits through the open (or partly open) holes in the Ocarina. Our tablature shows Mode 1 of the Pentatonic Scale. Other modes can be achieved through testing the note progression. Our tablature shows that 17 notes can be played on our Pentatonic 8 hole Ocarinas.
- Experiment, you can find more fingering combinations to achieve the note(s) you desire.
